CO2

Issues related to ozone depletion and the greenhouse effect have led to a growing worldwide interest in some of the “old” refrigerants, including ammonia (NH3), hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide (CO2). These are also called natural refrigerants, and were commonly used before synthetic alternatives were developed.

Although CO2 does have certain specific drawbacks, these are well known and well documented. On the other hand, CO2 is a natural component of the air surrounding us and has many specific advantages that make it very interesting for use in industrial refrigeration.

Not only is CO2 non-flammable, non-toxic and odourless, but its energy efficiency is as good as many synthetic alternatives – or better. It is increasingly used in low-temperature applications related to the food and beverage, petrochemical and marine industries.

Sabroe provides a full range of 40-bar reciprocating compressors and 30-bar maximum operating pressure screw compressors, as well as cascade coolers, liquid coolers and pressure vessels. Complete CO2/ammonia cascade units are also available.
