It was with great joy that Sabroe in April, 2004 received an order from our sister company YORK UK for four PAC 283 L twin chillers for the Heathrow Terminal 5. The chillers have a cooling capacity of 6.6 MW each - the largest PAC chillers to be produced and full-scale tested in the factory to date.

The air-conditioning chillers are designed to cool London Heathrow Airport’s brand new Terminal 5 (T5), currently the largest construction project in Europe. Our unrivalled expertise in the design, manufacture and factory testing of high-capacity ammonia chiller were some of the key factors for receiving this large order.

One of the very exciting milestones in this project was the factory approval test on 11-12 November, 2004 witnessed by BAA Engineering (enduser) and AMEC (main contractor). In order to carry out the test of the unit and the customer’s HV starter panel it was necessary to rebuild and extend the VSM test centre. After a very successful factory approval test each unit was split into three parts before dispatch due to the physical size. The mounting followed on site.

Thanks to the project team and their production and test centre colleagues’ efforts all four PAC 283 L chillers were supplied on time. An extension of T5 is anticipated later.

The units are now being installed in Heathrow.
